Kids Come First

(Campbell, Farrell)

Boyd Farrell: The Kids Come First were originally some lyrics I gave Sab and Iron Cross put their music to them. They stopped doing the song, so I had my own tune that I put with the lyrics. BMB started doing the song and it was a real catchy, straight up rocker. The chorus had a good hook but it always sounded sort of familiar. We had played the song a bunch of times when finally Dolfi (who wasn't playing with us at the time) hears it and says to me later, "What's up with the Christmas song?" Well, it turns out I had subconsciously lifted the chorus from an old English Christmas song called Ding, Dong, Merrily Am I. When I heard the Christmas song, it was almost note for note! I wasn't familiar with the song but I must have heard it when I was a kid or something and it stuck in my head.

we're not a bunch of pretty faces
we play in a band to get laid
we play all the shitty places
half the time we never get paid
my mother, she tells me I'm lazy
she says I should get a real job
she should see you kids go crazy
nobody can argue with a mob!

we're not gonna compromise
the things we're saying ain't rehearsed
we're not gonna tell you lies
to us, the kids come first!

we say what we want to say
we don't worry 'cause it's true
we play what we want to play
we just want to play it to you!
we don't follow every new trend
we don't claim to be in style
we just want to play to our drunk friends
you kids make it worthwhile!

we're not gonna compromise
the things we're saying ain't rehearsed
we're not gonna tell you lies
to us, the kids come first!
yeah, you! the kids come first!

we're just a bunch of mental cases
some say our brains are decayed
we play all the filthy places
the clubs won't book us, they're afraid
we don't follow every new trend
we don't want to be like the reast
we keep playing to our drunk friends
liquor makes them think we're the best!

we're not gonna compromise
the things we're saying ain't rehearsed
we're not gonna tell you lies
to us, the kids come first!

Skinhead

Boyd Farrell: A goofy attempt at Oi music. The lyrics were based on my cousin's stories of his days as a football hooligan in England. He was hanging with these National Front guys and it all sounded sort of glamorous. Being young and impressionable, I wrote the song. It was a football cheer with verses.

the Wanderer

Boyd Farrell: We played it like the Cramps and half the time I just made up the lyrics (usually X-rated!). We did it as a joke at rehearsals at first, but when we would get pretty loaded, we would pull it out of our ass just to shake up the ultra cool punks. That's why we played it at the Ritz in NYC! What a bunch of fucking pousers they were!
